Sailing tour company receives honor

The owners of Maui’s oldest sailing tour company, Trilogy Excursions, were awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award last month during the 2014 Mayor’s Small Business Awards at the King Kamehameha Golf Club.

Sailors Jim and Rand Coon started the company more than 40 years ago and have won numerous awards and helped support many local charities over the years, according to a news release from the Mayor’s Office on Wednesday. Trilogy is a four-generation business with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participating in the business.

James “Jason” Stenger Jr., 32, won the Young Small Business Person of the Year Award for Alpha Inc., his construction company that specializes in site work, water well drilling and renewable energy systems. He began with a single piece of equipment and reinvested profits in his company, purchasing more equipment over time to allow him to bid on bigger jobs. His business continued to thrive during the recession and logged a 350 percent revenue increase in the last two years.

“Small businesses are Maui County’s most important economic engine, and these awards celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that is alive and well in Maui County,” Mayor Alan Arakawa said in the news release. “Business owners take many risks, work long hours and put their personal assets on the line to provide our community with goods and services, as well as much-needed employment.”

Other winners included:

* Outstanding Nonprofit Business – The Maui Farm Inc.

* Exceptional Small Business (10 or fewer employees) – Mark Tracy, Valley Isle Marine Center Inc.
