Sprucing up garden

FIRST PHOTO: Kahului’s Kenneth Kono, 84, drags tree limbs past a pair of statues in the Japanese Garden at Iao Valley’s Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens during a community cleanup Saturday morning.

SECOND PHOTO: The work crew, which was removing water lettuce and hyacinth from the reflecting pool, trimming trees, pulling weeds and generally just giving the gardens a good sprucing up, included volunteers from a variety of groups including the Valley Isle Bonsai Club, the Japanese Cultural Society, Wailuku Hongwanji and the Maui High Japanese Club. Every year, the members of the bonsai club give the juniper, cypress and other special trees in the garden a careful trimming.
