Whales swim around in imaginations
FIRST PHOTO: Mark Jeffers, director and performer from Kauai’s Storybook Theatre, gives students and teachers from Makawao Hongwanji Preschool an inside and outside look at a humpback whale and her baby Wednesday morning in Pukalani. Jeffers said the 35-minute presentation introduces children to whale anatomy and behavior and also provides a brief history of whales in the Hawaiian Islands. “For preschool children, it is a great experience to have them more excited about learning about humpback whales,” Jeffers said. “We take a guided fantasy as she swims around the island in their imagination.”
SECOND PHOTO: The inflatable whale is 36 feet long, the size of a medium humpback. The momma’s name is Harmony and the baby’s, Melody. Jeffers is scheduled to give the presentation to several Maui preschools this week. He said other schools interested in scheduling a presentation should contact him through the program’s website, storybook.org.
