Bee grateful

First Photo: Worker bees circle their queen, ready to tend to her every need Wednesday morning during a visit to Kihei Elementary School’s garden.

Second Photo: Beekeeper Emil Lynch of Maui’s Best Honey brought the display hive with glass sides as part of a culmination of a series of classes detailing the important role bees play in the environment and in helping food grow. Lynch said that queen bees can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day, and they generally live between eight and 10 years, although at least one was recorded to have lived 20 years. Worker bees are all female, and they live about six weeks. Drones are males. They do no work and live about 45 days.
