Man, 24, killed in motorcycle crash

A 24-year-old Wailuku man died Wednesday night after a motorcycle he was riding collided with a guardrail along North Kihei Road near the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, police said.

Burton Salas sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene, police said. A preliminary investigation revealed that speed was a factor in the crash, police said.

Around 9:57 p.m. Wednesday, Salas was on a 2005 Suzuki GSX-R750K motorcycle traveling north on North Kihei Road when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and crossed left of center and crashed into a guardrail located on the west shoulder, police said.

Salas was wearing a helmet.

His death marks Maui County’s sixth traffic fatality this year, compared with four at the same time last year. It’s also the county’s third traffic fatality in the past week, with two involving motorcycle riders.

On Monday, 23-year-old Jared Robello of Kula died at Maui Memorial Medical Center after sustaining critical injuries Sunday night after falling out of a pickup truck bed while the truck was traveling on Kula Highway.

On April 4, 63-year-old Clifford Spencer died after losing control of his motorcycle and colliding with a guardrail on Piilani Highway just north of Kaiwahine Street in Kihei, police said.
