Tasty toppings from out of the ground

FIRST PHOTO: Kamalii Elementary School 4th-graders Rocky Chesley (faces visible foreground from right), Kelsey Hendricks and Samantha Lewis, all 10 years old, join classmates in making a pizza Friday afternoon with ingredients grown and harvested from the school’s Pizza Garden, Gardens of the World and Hawaiian Studies Gardens. Local chefs led garden recipe workshops for more than 600 students over three days at the school. The menu also included heirloom ko cane juice lemonade. Eric Mitchell from The Outrigger Pizza Co. fired the pizzas in his portable 1,000-degree kiawe wood-burning clay oven.

SECOND PHOTO: A gourmet artisan pizza with carrots, beets, zucchini, bell peppers, eggplant, herbs and marinara was served fresh from the oven Friday.

THIRD PHOTO: Students discussed the merits of a beet before eating one on their pizza. The school garden is managed by Grow Some Good, scheduled to hold harvest events at Kihei Elementary and Lokelani Intermediate schools this month.
