Bill would set volunteer policy for county parks

A bill calling for a park volunteer policy will be heard Tuesday afternoon before the Maui County Council’s Economic Development, Energy, Agriculture and Recreation Committee, according to an announcement.

The committee is scheduled to meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the eighth-floor Council Chambers of the Kalana O Maui Building.

Committee Chairman Don Guzman said the policy would provide opportunities for volunteers and donors to maintain, preserve, beautify and improve county playing fields and parks, including beaches.

“I’ve received an overwhelming amount of requests from park users for opportunities to give back and provide care for the park facilities they utilize,” Guzman said. “Having the ability for organizations to adopt a park under the guidance of the Parks Department will instill a sense of pride and responsibility among members of the community.”

The bill would establish implementing and guiding components, application and reporting requirements and provide for the appointment of a park volunteer coordinator.
