Kahoolawe trolling allowed

Trolling in the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve will be allowed for permitted vessels July 12, 13, 26 and 27, the The Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission has announced.

All vessels entering the reserve must register annually with the commission. Registered vessels are required to file a catch report with the commission any time they fish in the reserve, whether fish are caught or not.

A $25 permitting fee will be applied to the required registration process.

To register with the commission or for more information, contact Dean Tokishi by phone at 243-5889 or dtokishi@ kirc.hawaii.gov or go to kahoolawe.hawaii.gov to download a registration packet. Registration packets also are available at the Division of Boating and Recreation at 101 Maalaea Boat Harbor Road, Wailuku.

Access to reserve waters is restricted because of the continued presence of unexploded ordnance, as well as for the protection of marine resources within the reserve.
