Man arrested after crashing 2 vehicles

A Haiku man was arrested Monday for driving under the influence of intoxicants for allegedly crashing his girlfriend’s two cars and sending one person to the hospital, police said.

Daniel J. Richards Jr., 41, was charged with two counts each of reckless driving, inattention to driving, not having motor vehicle insurance, refusing to submit to testing and driving under the influence of liquor, police said.

Richards also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, first-degree terroristic threatening and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, police said. His bail was set at $4,200.

The incidents began around 2 p.m. when Richards hit a young female driver while driving his girlfriend’s black pickup truck on Hana Highway at the entrance to Hookipa Beach Park in East Maui, police said. Richards continued driving after the crash and sideswiped another car on the highway.

The young driver was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.

Richards left the truck at the scene and returned home on foot to drive his girlfriend’s other car, a silver Nissan sedan, police said. He crashed the second car into a pole on Hana Highway near Haiku Road and threatened police when they responded, police said.

Police found marijuana in his car when he was arrested.
