Rodeo runs in the family
(First photo) Kiana Makekau-Freitas, 4, gives Makawao Elementary School student Colten Kehano, 6, a big hug Thursday at Oskie Rice Arena. With some island families, rodeo is passed down from generation to generation. You could say it is in their blood. The rich cultural heritage of the sport will be on display all weekend at Oskie Rice Arena in Olinda during the 59th annual Makawao Rodeo. Qualifying is scheduled to continue today, followed by the “Bull Bash” at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s events will begin at 1 p.m.
(Second photo) Kamea Otsuka rings a cowbell while calling customers to a rodeo food booth with grandmother Donna Otsuka on Thursday afternoon. Kamea’s mom, Trina Otsuka, twice qualified to compete in the National High School Rodeo Championships back when she was a student at King Kekaulike High School.
