Vehicle strikes pole, causes Upcountry, East Maui outage

Nearly 6,400 Upcountry and East Maui customers lost power for several hours late Friday night through midday Saturday after a vehicle hit a utility pole along Hana Highway in Kuau, according to Maui Electric Co. spokeswoman Shayna Decker.

The crash with the pole happened around 11:35 p.m. Friday, leaving about 6,390 customers without power in Makawao, Haiku, Peahi, Huelo, Kailua, Keanae, Nahiku and Hana, she said. Crews replaced the pole and broken equipment, and power was restored to all customers by 1:20 p.m.

There was no immediate information available on the condition of the motorist and any passengers.

Decker said a separate power outage on Saturday afternoon affected about 6,400 customers in parts of Waiehu, Lahaina, Kula, Olinda and Pukalani.

That outage began at 3:27 p.m. and was triggered by an automatic power grid reaction to a sudden drop in wind-generated power, she said. Power was returned to all customers by 4 p.m.
