Crash badly injures Kula man

An 18-year-old Kula man suffered life-threatening injuries when he lost control of the car he was driving, crossed the centerline and crashed into a rock embankment Tuesday, police said.

The crash occurred at 12:53 p.m. on Piilani Highway south of Upper Kanaio Road in Ulupalakua.

The 2005 Buick was traveling south on the highway toward Kaupo when it went onto the makai shoulder and overcorrected back onto the roadway, where the driver lost control, police said. The car crossed into the oncoming lane before eventually crashing into the mauka shoulder rock embankment, police said.

The driver was flown by air ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

His passengers – a 26-year-old man, a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy – were also taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, police said. The three passengers are Keanae residents.
