Fire burns cottage in Hana; total damage put at $6,600
A family’s one-story, two-bedroom cottage was significantly damaged by a fire early Tuesday morning in Hana, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to a call of smoke above the residence between Mile Marker 28 and 29 in upper Nahiku at around 8 a.m., Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said. Heavy smoke was coming from eaves with flames near the front door of the 500-square-foot cottage when firefighters arrived, he said.
The fire was contained to one of the bedrooms, and about one-third of the cottage was destroyed, Mainaga said. He said no one was home at the time of the fire.
The damage to the structure was $5,600, with $1,000 damage to its contents, said Mainaga.
The cause of the fire is undetermined but appears to be an accidental, he said.
