Man dies, was diving off D.T. Fleming park
A 43-year-old man died Friday while he was diving about 3 miles offshore of D.T. Fleming Beach Park, Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said.
Lifeguards and firefighters were sent to the scene shortly after noon when the Teralani III catamaran reported it had recovered diving gear about a half-mile offshore of the beach, Mainaga said. No diver was seen in the area.
Rescuers called in the Maui Fire Department’s Air One helicopter and rescue firefighters from Kahului to help in an air and ocean search, he said.
Around 1:50 p.m., crew members aboard the helicopter spotted the missing diver floating face down about 3 miles offshore, Mainaga said. A lifeguard aboard a personal watercraft brought the man to shore at Fleming Beach. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the man as Christopher Kuwada of Waikapu.
