New charity walk total breaks record

The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association released an updated dollar amount Saturday on the money raised for Maui County at the 36th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk, announcing a record-breaking $939,821.

The grand total was the most the event has raised in any year in its history and is $104,264 more than last year’s then-record-setting amount, the association announced.

The charity walk events in April on Molokai and Lanai and in May on Maui drew 3,581 walkers. Money raised had originally been reported at $863,542, but “funds have continued to roll in,” the association said.

“Our industry remains committed to providing for and positively impacting the lives of the people of Maui County,” said Lisa Paulson, executive director of Maui Hotel & Lodging Association. “This year, we are thrilled to have raised even more than last year, which has enabled us to award significant and valuable funding to over 100 worthy Maui County organizations. The range of services of these recipients touches many residents’ lives from children to the elderly, from athletic organizations to service-related agencies; from health to housing.”

Maui drew 3,196 walkers and raised $831,844 during its fundraiser – more per capita than any other island in the state for the fifth straight year, the association said. Molokai drew 200 walkers and raised $66,849, and Lanai had 185 walkers and raked in $41,128.

The annual fundraiser raised more than $1.9 million total this year, with the additions of events held on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island, the association said. Maui County has raised a cumulative total of $8.4 million.

Next year’s Visitor Industry Charity Walk is scheduled for May 2 on Molokai and Lanai, and May 9 on Maui.
