Police: Attempt to hide fails

A Lahaina man sought in assault and theft investigations was arrested early Sunday after he ran into someone else’s apartment to try to hide, police said.

Bail was set at $17,000 for Andrew Nakihei, 28. He was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree unauthorized entry into a dwelling, resisting arrest and second-degree theft.

Police were looking for Nakihei after he struck another man with a PVC pipe in the parking lot of Old Lahaina Luau on Front Street, then fled Friday night, police said. On Saturday, Nakihei was recognized on surveillance video showing the theft of a surfboard in Kaanapali, police said.

An all-points bulletin had been issued for Nakihei before Lahaina patrol officers saw him in the Lahaina town area early Sunday. As officers went to arrest Nakihei for assault and theft, he fled, running to an apartment complex and into the apartment of residents who don’t know Nakihei, police said. He was trying to hide from officers, police said, and resisted as he was being arrested.

Court records show Nakihei is awaiting trial in another case on a second-degree assault charge alleging he assaulted a Longhi’s restaurant employee July 4.
