Retiring pilot departs for new chapter in life

First Photo: Retiring United Airlines pilot Capt. Bob Johnson goes over his preflight checks with co-pilot Neil Powalski before departing on his final flight Tuesday afternoon at Kahului Airport. Johnson, 62, has been flying for the airlines for 36 years, and he had his pilot’s license before he had a license to drive a car. “I’ve been blessed with a long career,” Johnson said. “I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my life, but I’m going to miss all the great people. It’s kind of a hard thing.” Johnson said he planned to continue flying his own plane. Passengers on his final flight included his wife, Irene Johnson, and their sons, James and Michael.

Second Photo: United Airlines personnel presented Johnson with lei and a retirement cake as he entered the plane, and they then lined the tarmac as it was pushed back from the terminal.
