Schools, offices reopening today
Having dodged Tropical Storms Iselle and Julio, public and private schools will reopen today along with state and Maui County offices.
St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School, St. Anthony Grade School and St. Anthony Preschool, all in Wailuku, were closed out of “an abundance of caution,” said Betsey Gunderson, head of school for the junior-senior high school.
Also returning to classes are students from Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina and Christ the King Child Development Center in Kahului.
The two-day closure gave school officials a chance to exercise emergency preparedness plans, Gunderson said.
In other post-storm developments, Maui Electric Co. announced Sunday that its crews were working to return power service to 39 customers in parts of Olinda and Piiholo who blacked out after being struck by Iselle’s strong winds and rain Friday morning. Repair crews also were working to fixed damaged power lines in Ulupalakua, which was hard-hit by the storm.
MECO President Sharon Suzuki thanked customers for their “continued patience and understanding as our crews are making steady progress in restoring power to all customers.”
The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning for Maui County through today. Surf was forecast to rise to 10 to 15 feet.
Beachgoers should be wary of strong waves and rip currents, officials said.
