Update 8:15 p.m.: Power restored in Kihei
Kihei firefighters were responding Friday evening to a report of a brush fire in the vicinity of Ohukai Road and Piilani Highway, Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said.
The alarm came in between 6:45 and 7 p.m., he said.
Other details were not immediately available.
Emergency dispatchers were reporting a possible explosion of an electrical transformer, and there were reports of people being stuck in elevators in South Maui.
Shortly after 7 p.m., Maui Electric Co. reported that the outage was bounded by Kanakanui Road, Piilani Highway, South Kihei Road and Kealii Alanui Street, as well as powerline laterals connected with those areas.
Service was restored to all custormers by 8:03 p.m., according to a release from MECO
