Big waves on Maui’s north shore
Rafael Escobar cuts back at the bottom of a large wave rolling into Honolua Bay on the west side on Thursday morning. The large waves, produced by a northwest swell, closed Hookipa Beach Park in Paia on Thursday. The park was expected to reopen today. A high-surf warning was canceled Thursday evening but a high-surf advisory remained in effect until 6 p.m. today. Surf along north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai was expected to be between 14 and 18 feet and along west-facing shores of Molokai between 8 to 12 feet today. The National Weather Service warned of strong breaking waves and shore break and longshore and rip currents.
