First photo: St. Anthony 7th-grader Anjel Dela Cruz, 12, watches intently as Maui Electric Co. engineer Kimberley Vaituulala explains a step in building a tiny MP3 player Thursday morning during an “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” event at MECO in Kahului. Students from St. Anthony and Iao Intermediate were hosted by the utility as part of National Engineers Week. The goal is to encourage more elementary and middle-school students to pursue an education in engineering and to highlight contributions by engineers.

Second photo: St. Anthony 8th-grader Jocelyn Corpuz, 13, assembles a simple MP3 player Thursday. “This is really interesting,” Corpuz said. “It’s cool how the wires connect to make something. It’s amazing.”
