The beginning of the end

The first announced Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. cane burn of the season occurred early Thursday on the Kihei side of upper Pulehu Road. This photo was taken at 4 a.m. from Pukalani. The cane burn is another signal that the 144th harvest season, the last for the sugar company, has begun. In January, parent company Alexander & Baldwin announced the closure of the sugar plantation after the harvesting season, which is expected to go into November or December.
