An art Maui lesson
University of Hawaii Maui College Art 101 students had the unexpected treat of meeting artist Sidney Yee while visiting Art Maui 2016 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Schaefer International Gallery on Thursday afternoon. Instructor Michael Takemoto had his students study the Yee painting titled “So long ago, it seems like a dream” for a timed minute, encouraging them to “imprint this image in your mind. What was the artist thinking? What were they trying to capture and convey?” It just so happened that Yee was in the gallery. The former Lahainaluna High art teacher, who teaches seniors at the Kaunoa Senior Center, stepped in after the exercise to share some of the tricks of his trade before the students set off to find their favorite pieces in the 38th annual juried exhibition. “Pay attention to the composition,” Yee said. “Know that an artist can draw the eye in and move it around. Think about what you are attracted to and how that happens.” Art Maui is scheduled to run through April 23. It is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and before Castle Theater shows.
