Beeing as careful as possible

Maui bee removal expert Dennis Morihiro uses a custom vacuum in an attempt to capture a queen and her hive Thursday while clearing a colony from a civil defense siren at Haycraft Park in Maalaea. Morihiro estimated that there were between 40,000 and 50,000 bees in the hive. When the door to the siren was first opened, a large honeycomb that dropped from the hive was big enough to cover the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket with several inches of wax and honey. A county parks maintenance worker discovered the bees about a week and a half ago when he went to paint over some graffiti on the wooden box where the siren is located, said Maui County spokesman Rod Antone. State civil defense paid for the beekeeper to remove the hive. The bees will be relocated to the beekeeper’s farm, he said.
