Ing secures state House endorsements
South Maui Democratic Rep. Kaniela Ing has been endorsed by House Speaker Joe Souki, House Majority Leader Scott Saiki and House Finance Committee Chairwoman Sylvia Luke, according to an announcement from the candidate.
“While Ing and I come from different generations and do not always agree on issues, he honors the Legislature’s code of conduct,” said Souki, who called Ing a “rising leader in the Legislature.”
“He never calls out folks by name. He forewarns me of his disagreements, and he always stays true to his word. This is honorable,” the longtime Wailuku Democrat said. “For a young man, Ing has demonstrated intelligence, collaboration and a dedication to fight for the middle and working class people of Hawaii. He has earned the respect and friendship of his peers and a position as chairperson in the House (the Ocean, Marine Resources & Hawaiian Affairs Committee) – one of only two sophomore legislators to do so.”
Luke credited Ing with being “instrumental” in securing an initial $130 million for the Kihei high school project and another $37.5 million this year.
A member of the House since 2012, Ing is seeking re-election to the 11th House District seat, which serves residents of Kihei, Wailea and Makena. He’s being challenged in the Democratic primary by Deidre Tegarden, a protocol consultant and former chief of protocol for Govs. Neil Abercrombie and David Ige.
