Cop on top
Maui Special Olympics athletes Brandon DeCambra (left) and Alan Gascon joke around Thursday afternoon in front of Walmart in Kahului. The athletes, who have intellectual disabilities, were accepting donations to kick off the 15th annual Cop on Top fundraiser, which goes through Saturday. Organizers hope to raise $20,000 to help pay for uniforms, fees and airfare to the state games Nov. 19 and 20 on Oahu. Maui County has about 240 athletes currently training in basketball and bowling. Cop on Top locations also include the Maui Lani, Kahului, Kihei and Lahaina Safeway stores. Today’s hours are from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday’s are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will continue at the Walmart location until 5 p.m. Saturday.
