Beached whale causes shore closures

A pygmy whale was beached Saturday morning around 9:30 a.m. at Poolenalena Beach, also known as Chang’s Beach, in Wailea, fire officials said.

The shoreline from White Rock to Five Graves was closed for at least two hours, following state protocol for shark sightings, said Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto.

Oceangoers were told to get out of the water.

High winds affect surf on Maui, Molokai

Strong trade winds will generate surf from 5 to 8 feet on the east-facing shores of Maui and Molokai, according to an advisory posted by the Maui Civil Defense Agency.

The advisory will remain in effect until 6 p.m. today. The strong surf will produce rip currents and erode beaches.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice of lifeguards and be wary of dangerous shoreline and ocean conditions.

Weather forecasters predicted that strong breezy winds would persist into today, followed by a gradual decline early next week.
