Hearings set for new fishing rules

Hearings on restrictions on fishing in the newly expanded area of the Papahanaumo-kuakea Marine National Monument will be held on Maui tonight and on Molokai on Dec. 16, the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council announced.

By presidential executive order, commercial fishing will be prohibited and noncommercial and Native Hawaiian subsistence fishing will be regulated in the expanded area, the announcement said.

The Maui meeting will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at the Courtyard Maui Kahului Airport hotel and from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 17 at Kaunakakai Elementary School.

Kula waterline break interrupts service

Department of Water Supply customers from Copp Road in Kula to Keokea may have experienced low water pressure or an interruption to water service on Wednesday following a waterline break, the department said.

Work on the break finished ahead of schedule at 1 p.m., officials said. Customers who experienced low water pressure were asked to conserve water and avoid unnecessary water use.

25K pounds of rice donated for holidays

The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association distributed 25,000 pounds of rice during its annual “Rice for the Holidays” program throughout Maui County this November and December, according to an announcement.

The program began in 2008 when the association partnered with Jim Coon of Trilogy Excursions in its annual giveaway of turkeys to Lanai residents. The association added a 5-pound bag of rice with the turkey.

Since then, the program has expanded to provide rice for Maui and Molokai residents. And, in 2011, Hana was added.

The rice was distributed Nov. 19 on Lanai, Dec. 3 on Molokai and in Hana.

The “Feed My Sheep” program distributed the rice.

Association partners that make the program possible include Costco Wholesale, Young Brothers and Island Movers.

New vet office opens in Maui Lani

The Maui Lani Veterinary Hospital has opened at 40 Paa St. in Kahului.

Dr. Tana Weeks, founder of the hospital and veterinarian, has been in the animal-care field since she was a junior in high school in Ohio, more than two decades ago. She graduated from Ohio State University’s veterinary school in June 2001 and worked in a small animal veterinary clinic in Greensboro, N.C., from 2001 to 2009, before moving to Maui after marrying her husband, Brad. On Maui, she worked for two years with Dr. Wayne Kot in Wailuku and five years with Dr. Jeffry Morrison at Wailuku Pet Clinic.

Equipment available at the Maui Lani clinic includes digital X-ray, temperature-controlled oxygen therapy cage in the intensive care unit and an isolation room for contagious diseases, an announcement said.

Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday; 8 a.m. to noon Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
