Retiring Maui High School Principal Bruce Anderson is hugged by students Haley Gomes (from left), Erin Prieto, Kaimi Lay-Fuentes and Tyra Anne Acoba on his last day at the school with students Wednesday. “It’s one of the saddest days of my high school years,” said Acoba, who is a senior. “He’s been with us since freshman year. It’s really sad to see him go before our graduation, but he’ll probably be there. Once a Saber, always a Saber.” Anderson said he started his teaching career in 1982 as a social studies teacher at Paia School. After a stint as the Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui Complex Area superintendent, he became Maui High’s principal. Despite the long hours and challenges, he said he will never regret taking the principal’s position. “This is the best job I ever had,” Anderson said. “I love being with the kids.” The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo
