Brush fires keep crews hopping on Saturday
Firefighters responded to two brush fires on Saturday, according to Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto.
Early Saturday morning, Kula firefighters received a call from a passing motorist at about 5:15 a.m. that there was a brush fire on Pulehu Road, he said. The crew arrived at the scene at 5:27 a.m. and doused two 10-by-10-foot brush fires a short distance from the road shoulder, mauka of Opalipali Place. The fires were about 30 feet apart.
They were extinguished at 5:45 a.m., he said.
At 1:43 p.m. Saturday, Lahaina firefighters received a report of a 50-by-50-foot blaze in grass and rubbish in a vacant lot mauka of Honoapiilani Highway near Prison Street, Taomoto said. Engine and water tanker crews were at the scene at 1:50 p.m., and they had it under control at 2:05 p.m.
No structures were threatened, he said. The fire was extinguished at 2:30 p.m.
Firefighters did not determine the cause of the Pulehu Road and Lahaina fires.
