Crash causes traffic to back up
A near-fatal traffic accident on Honoapiilani Highway closed the roadway and left a pileup of traffic on Saturday.
The road was reopened at 4 p.m., according to police. However, traffic congestion continued.
Maui police spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto said there was a single-car accident around Mile Marker 7 in Maalaea.
“The passenger was ejected and listed in critical condition,” he said.
Kahului-bound lanes of the highway were contra-flowed from about 2:30 to 4 p.m., he said, citing preliminary information.
