Film about Israel to screen

“Body and Soul,” a new documentary that shows the historical connection between the Jewish people and the land of Israel, will screen at 6 p.m. Sunday at Milega Hawaii, 315 Hukilike St. in Kahului.

A Voice For Israel is sponsoring the event, and while admission is free donations will be accepted.

Smart Driver Class in Kahului

AARP’s Smart Driver Class will be offered from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Roselani Place, 88 S. Papa Ave. in Kahului.

These classes are designed for drivers 50 years and older but all adults are welcome to attend. The emphasis is to become more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one’s driving ability and how to compensate.

The fee is $20 (cash or check) and will be collected at the beginning of class. AARP members receive $5 discount with proof of membership. Some insurance carriers offer discounts to those who complete this class.

Preregistration is requested. Call Kaunoa Senior Center at 270-7308.

Maui writers to sign new book

Members of Maui Writers Ink will sign their inaugural collection of 33 stories and poems at a book-signing beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at the Joelle C. Gallery, 505 Front St., Unit 107 in Lahaina.

Many of the authors will be present to sign purchases. The books are $15 and are also available at the Lahaina Courthouse Gift shop, the Friends of the Library bookstores at Lahaina’s Wharf Cinema Center and Kahului’s Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, and from the authors themselves.

Kamehameha Schools to hold drill

Kamehameha Schools Maui will be conducting a lockdown drill during the school day on Friday with the Maui Police Department’s Special Response Team. There will be three separate drills, one at each division (elementary, middle and high school). MPD vehicles and MPD personnel will be actively engaged on the campus during the drill.

This is a planned drill to improve the school’s safety and response plans. For more information, call the school’s headmaster’s office at 572-3100.

Engineering Day set at shopping center

Maui Science Center and Queen Ka’ahumanu Center invite curious and inventive minds of all ages to Engineering Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the shopping center in Kahului.

Attendees can design and build a marble run with the help of a professional engineer, test a flying apparatus, check out local robotics creations and other hands-on activities and demonstrations from local engineering companies and community organizations.

This event is hosted by Maui Science Center as part of the National Engineers Week celebration. Volunteers and sponsors are welcome.

Sierra Club Maui to hold annual meeting

Sierra Club Maui will have its annual meeting from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville.

Everyone is welcome and asked to bring food and plate/cup/utensils for the potluck.

The program includes the annual awards ceremony and special panel discussion on Sierra Club Maui’s new coalition campaign, “Hukilike No Maui: Together for Maui.”

Flatbread Co., Mana Foods and Whole Foods Market will donate food for the event.

Easter Island statues subject of lecture

The public is invited to a lecture about the statues on Easter Island from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Pilina Building’s multipurpose room on the University of Hawaii Maui College campus.

The lecture, sponsored by the school’s Anthropology Club, is titled “Revealing Rapanui’s Mysterious Past: The Statues that Walked.” It will be given by Terry L. Hunt, dean, professor of anthropology at Robert D. Clark Honors College, University of Oregon.
