Imua Keiki O Ke Kai organizer Andrea Moller gets a hug from Ryan Behn on Saturday at Kahului Harbor. The fifth annual event for Camp Imua campers and Special Olympic athletes drew more than 60 Maui ocean athletes, who volunteered their time to provide a safe and fun time riding outrigger canoes, windsurfing boards, kayaks and personal watercraft. Moller said that the large number of qualified volunteers allows parents and caregivers to feel confident allowing their children to try activities they might otherwise not be able to. “I feel the ocean is a bigger challenge, so a lot of these kids don’t get out on the water,” Moller said. The event is a precursor to Paddle Imua, a benefit race for Camp Imua scheduled for May 6. The downwind race from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor raises funds for the annual summer camp for Maui children with special needs.
