Deadline for tuition assistance nears

A new application period for the state preschool tuition assistance program for low- and moderate-income families comes to an end Wednesday, the state Department of Human Services has announced.

Preschool Open Doors assistance is for the July 1 to June 30, 2018, period. It aims to provide aid to children whose families might otherwise not be able to afford preschool. Underserved or at-risk children receive priority for the program, and funds are limited.

To qualify for the program, children must be eligible to enter kindergarten in the 2018-2019 school year (born between Aug. 1, 2012, and July 31, 2013). Families may choose any one of the 434 state-licensed preschools.

Interested families may request an application from the department’s contractor, PATCH, by visiting patchhawaii.org or calling (808) 791-2130 or toll free (800) 746-5620. Applications should be mailed to PATCH — POD, 560 N. Nimitz Highway, Suite 218, Honolulu 96817; faxed to (808) 694-3066; or emailed to PODAdmin@patch-hi.org.

Aquarium opens marine theater

The Makai Theater, which will show films about marine life and the ocean, is the newest attraction at the Maui Ocean Center.

The 500-square-foot theater can seat 30 people and will offer three showtimes daily, the Maui Ocean Center said Monday. The theater features a high-definition projector and surround sound.

“The theater not only teaches guests about Hawaii’s marine life, it also enables them to go beyond the aquarium to learn about topics that affect the wider ocean environment,” said Colleen Foster, director of education.

The Makai Theater will feature a daily rotating schedule of 15- to 30-minute short films and a single 45-minute feature film. The film currently showing is “In the Wake of Giants,” which shows the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Large Whale Entanglement Response team led by Ed Lyman.

Film showtimes are 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the front entrance. For more information, visit www.mauioceancenter.com or call 270-7000.
