‘Kuleana’ subject of Akaku Salon Series

Officials from the new mystery and drama film “Kuleana” will be discussing the production of the movie from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Akaku Maui Community Television Suite 204, 333 Dairy Road in Kahului.

Writer/director Brian Kohne and editor Adi Ellad will discuss screenwriting, packaging, financing production, post-production and marketing and distribution.

The presentation is geared toward serious producers and aspiring student filmmakers, a news release said. The film “Kuleana” will debut at the Maui Film Festival in June.

The event is part of Akaku Upstairs Salon Series. Kohne and Ellad also produced the Maui-based film “Get a Job.”

‘Our Heroes’ will be shown on Monday

“Our Heroes,” which includes historic interviews and eyewitness accounts from nisei veterans who served in the Pacific during World War II, will air at 6:30 p.m. Monday on Akaku Blue Channel 55.

This special presentation is the first of a series, sponsored by Maui’s Sons and Daughters of the Nisei Veterans and hosted by Deidre Tegarden, executive director of the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center of Maui County.

During World War II, approximately 33,000 Japanese-Americans served in the U.S. armed forces. The nisei veterans fought in Europe, the Pacific and Asia. Many of them were fighting overseas while their family members were imprisoned in internment camps.

Italian American Club to hear pilot

Helicopter pilot Peter Vorhese will be the guest speaker at the Italian American Social Club of Kihei’s meeting Tuesday at St. Theresa Church in Kihei.

Vorhese works for Windward Aviation and pilots the Maui County Fire Department’s Air One helicopter.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. with a potluck. Members are encouraged to provide a main dish, salad or dessert.

Alzheimer’s benefit planned on June 4

A workout and nutritional meal fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association will be held on June 4 at Sugar Beach in Kihei.

Brekkie Bowls is presenting “Maui Move for Your Mind,” which begins with registration at 8:30 a.m.

A $20 entry fee will allow participants to either receive a yoga flow session led by Uplift Maui or a beach workout led by Makena Crossfit.

Following the workout will be a recovery meal from Brekkie Bowls. All entry fees will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Hale Mahaolu Elua will hold a plant and rummage sale from 7 to 11 a.m. on June 3.

Korean livestock workshop scheduled

A workshop discussing Korean natural farming for livestock will be held June 1 and 2 at the University of Hawaii Maui College in Kahului.

Michael Duponte, Hawaii County livestock extension agent, will discuss the methods. Duponte has been certified under Korean Natural Farming Master Cho to teach others how to use indigenous microorganisms to inoculate the pig litter, rending it without smell or flies, a news release said.

The two-day workshop will also focus on getting permits for the piggeries and how to build ideal structures.

The workshops will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. June 1 and 8 to 11 a.m. June 2.

Cost is $50 for Hawaii Farmers Union United members. Nonmembers’ cost is $100 and includes a one-year HFUU membership.

Dance recital to be held at Seabury Hall

Alexander Academy Performing Company, the nonprofit student dance company of the Alexander Academy of Performing Arts dance school, will present “Once Upon a Time: Storybook Dances” at 2 and 6 p.m. June 3 and at 2 p.m. June 4 at Seabury Hall’s ‘A’ali’ikuhonua Creative Arts Center, 480 Olinda Road in Makawao.

The recital will showcase over 150 student dancers ages 3 to adult and will feature many dance styles, including ballet, contemporary and jazz.

General admission is $15 adults and $10 keiki (ages 2-12). VIP seats are $25 adults, $18 keiki. Tickets are on sale at www.storybookdances.brownpapertickets.com.

Hospital auxiliary members recognized

The Maui Memorial Medical Center staff hosted a breakfast for Maui Memorial Hospital Auxiliary members on April 27. The following auxiliary members received pins for the number of hours given the prior year:

* Evelyn Cabalo and Judy Kitagawa volunteered 2,000 hours.

* John Clark, Barbara Potopowitz and Karl Stoerker volunteered 1,000 hours.

* Sam Hughey and Marilyn Knecht volunteered 500 hours.

* Valerie Medeiros, Dina Shadian and Mary Vellani volunteered 100 hours.

* A special Emmy-type award was given to Barbara Willmore for establishing the hospital auxiliary 50 years ago. The Emmy award was for her home and a plaque with her picture was made to hang in the hospital’s Gift Shop.

The hospital staff was thanked for the breakfast and for participating in this event.

‘Aha Mele winning students announced

Kamehameha Schools Maui’s 15th annual ‘Aha Mele, held on April 28 at Ka’ulaheanuiokamoku, was attended by more than 2,000 parents and the school ‘ohana. The event featured an evening of music performed by the entire student body.

This year’s theme, “Ho’onanea — The Golden Years of Hawaiian Music,” featured the songs “Pehea Ho’i Au,” introduced by Ha’eha’e Kane and led by Montana-Rae Vaught (senior class); “E Maliu Mai,” introduced by Makamae Aquino and led by Tyson Ha’upu (juniors); “Ku’u Ipo Pua Rose,” introduced by Healani Tolentino and led by Brennan Ikaika Mendez (sophomores); and “Ku’u Wa Li’ili’I,” introduced by Alayna Evans and led by Taj Joaquin (freshmen).

At the end of the evening, three awards were given: Ka Lei A Pauahi, Director’s Award to Montana-Rae Vaught; Ka Hulu Kupuna, Olelo Hawai’i Award to the Class of 2017; and “Ka Maka O Ka Ihe” the point of the spear, Overall Winner to the Class of 2017.

Judges for the evening were: Ka Olelo Hawai’i — Pulama Collier; Music — Marlene Sai; Presentation — Kaumaka’iwa Kanaka’ole; and Overall — Kimo Alama Keaulana.

The ‘Aha Mele was coordinated by the Kawehionalani Arts & Communications Academy.

Piano recital set at Iao Congregational

Rose Johnson’s piano students will have a recital at 1 p.m. June 3 at the Iao Congregational Church in Wailuku.

The students, including seniors Kylie Davis, Grace Maeda and Soraya Ragasa, will be performing a variety of contemporary, folk and classical pieces.

This free event is open to the public.
