Manele finger piers to be replaced

The state will begin removing 11 wooden finger piers at Manele Small Boat Harbor on Lanai and replace them with aluminum-framed piers beginning Monday, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation announced Friday.

During the work, which is expected to last until Aug. 31, there will be no temporary moorings in the harbor. The existing disability accessible finger pier at Slips 1 and 2 and the boat launch ramp will be open for the duration of the project, the division said.

The existing ferry pier at the harbor will remain open.

The project, contracted to Sea Engineering Inc., has a $789,799 price tag, the division said. The project will help improve user safety and provide improved access.

The existing wooden finger piers have been deteriorating for many years and are in need of replacement, the division said. The new aluminum-framed finger piers will have slip-resistant, fiber-reinforced plastic decking, plastic lumber fendering and cleats.
