Woman charged with robbery

A Kihei woman was arrested on a robbery charge after she punched and kicked a security guard who confronted her about shoplifting from a Kahului store Thursday night, police said.

Ashley Newton, 27, was charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree assault and fourth-degree theft. Her bail was set at $5,000.

Newton was seen leaving Wal-Mart at 10:21 p.m. Thursday without paying for merchandise valued at $90, according to police. When a security guard told her to return to the store, she refused, police said. Newton and the security guard struggled over a bag containing the merchandise, and she punched him in the throat and kicked him in the groin, according to police.

Newton fled in a vehicle that police stopped about eight minutes later at Hana and Haleakala highways in Kahului, police said.
