Canadian dies in waters off Kihei

A Canadian woman, found floating in the waters off Kihei, died at the scene Thursday after attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, fire officials said.

Wailea firefighters got the call at about 10 a.m. and arrived at the beach fronting the Mana Kai Maui Resort 10 minutes later, said Fire Services Chief Ed Taomoto.

A husband and wife were snorkeling and decided to return to shore after becoming tired, Taomoto said. The husband went to the beach and noticed that his wife had not come ashore. After looking for her, he found her floating on the surface of the water.

He and a stand-up paddleboarder went out to recover the woman, Taomoto said. She was placed on the paddleboard and brought to shore.

A visiting physician, a couple of nurses and a firefighter performed CPR until Wailea firefighters arrived, he said. Wailea firefighters and later paramedics continued CPR, but she could not be resuscitated.

The 52-year-old woman died at the scene, he said.
