Man arrested in rental car theft attempt
A 35-year-old Wailuku man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he was seen breaking a window to reach into a rental car in the Twin Falls area of Haiku, police said.
Police Crime Reduction Unit officers were assigned to the area in response to numerous reports of recent car break-ins, police said. From July 16 to Aug. 2, 10 vehicle break-ins were reported at Twin Falls.
When officers approached the man who was seen breaking into the car, he tried to run but was quickly apprehended, police said. A vehicle that the man had arrived in also was stopped at the scene. It was being driven by a 30-year-old Wailuku woman who had three juvenile passengers, police said.
The man was arrested for first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, fourth-degree criminal property damage, resisting arrest and three counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. He was later released pending further investigation.
The woman driving the vehicle and her children were released at the scene pending further investigation.
