County / In Brief

Police arrested a homeless man who was taking items from inside a Pukalani residence Saturday morning, police said.

Officers checking the area located Kianu Pelekai-Peneku, 21, on Hiolani Street, about a block away from the burglarized home, said Lt. Derrick Lopez, head of the Property Crimes Unit of the Criminal Investigation Division.

Pelekai-Peneku was charged with first-degree burglary. His bail was set at $5,000.

The burglary was reported at about 10:30 a.m., when residents reported seeing a man in the home removing items, Lopez said. He said the man, later identified as Pelekai-Peneku, dropped the items before running.

Pelekai-Peneku also is being investigated on drug charges after he was found with contraband, Lopez said.
