Prekindergarten classes added
Kula Elementary and Kilohana Elementary on Molokai are among five schools statewide added to the state Department of Education’s free prekindergarten program for the next school year, the department announced Thursday.
The program, a partnership between the department and the Executive Office on Early Learning, provides early-learning experiences to youths in the year prior to their entrance into kindergarten. The programs are run on department elementary school campuses statewide and began in the 2014-15 school year, the department said.
Kula and Kilohana were selected based on a competitive application process, the department said. The two schools join Hana High and Elementary, Lanai High and Elementary and Kaunakakai Elementary in Maui County.
There are income eligibility requirements for the program. Only 20 students are selected for each classroom. For more information on prekindergarten and early learning, go to bit.ly/1P9ewxx.
