Produce vouchers program canceled

A program to provide low-income seniors with vouchers for fresh produce has been canceled.

Maui Economic Opportunity was asked by the state Office of Community Services to handout the vouchers for $50 worth of coupons to qualified seniors, said Debbie Cabebe, CEO of MEO.

Those receiving the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers were to redeem them at the Upcountry Farmers Market at the Kula Malu Town Center.

However, the state and the farmers market could not reach an agreement on reimbursement so the state pulled the program, Cabebe said. It is her understanding that those who have applied for the coupons are being notified of the cancellation of the program.
