Red flag warns swimmers

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo

A red flag at Kamaole III Beach Park warns of waves, wind and currents on Tuesday afternoon. Not long after this photo was taken, the ocean safety officer on duty made an announcement warning swimmers they were drifting down the beach toward rocks. The National Weather Service posted a small craft warning through Thursday afternoon and a special weather statement warning of possible king tides into early next week. King tides are caused by high ocean levels coupled with high tides. The statement warns of the greatest possible coastal flooding midday today and Thursday and mid-to-late afternoon Friday and into early next week. King tides may flood beaches that are normally dry.
