Snorkeler who died in Honolua Bay ID’d

A snorkeler who was pronounced dead Wednesday after he was pulled from the water at Honolua Bay was identified as 58-year-old William Torrie of Alberta, Canada, police said.

Witnesses said the man got into trouble while snorkeling in the bay and became unresponsive, said Maui police spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto. Bystanders brought the man to shore and began lifesaving efforts.

Emergency crews, responding at 2:17 p.m., continued efforts to resuscitate the man before he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. An autopsy is scheduled.
