Resurfacing work on highway continues

Resurfacing and cold plane work will prompt alternating lane closures on Haleakala Highway in both directions this week, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The closures will occur in the vicinity of North Firebreak Road from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The DOT also announced the following work and lane closures for Maui County roadways:

• There will be alternating lane closures on Hana Highway in both directions between Mileposts 14 and 15 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for road maintenance.

• The left lane of eastbound Kaahumanu Avenue will be closed between Aku Place and Lunalilo Street for sewer line work from 7 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Upcountry issues the topic in Kula

The Kula Community Association meeting Wednesday will touch on issues relating to schools, Kula Hospital and agricultural property assessments.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Kula Community Center.

Principals from Kula Elementary, Haleakala Waldorf, Kalama Intermediate, King Kekaulike High and Carden Academy will discuss changes in their schools relating to curriculum and traffic and suggest help they may need from the community.

Kula Hospital’s new senior director, Kim Fuson, will discuss changes that may be taking place now that Kaiser Permanente has taken over the hospital’s management. The meeting also will provide a forum for recommendations from Upcountry residents.

County Real Property Tax Assessments Division Assistant Administrator Gery Madriaga will explain how agriculture-use parcels are assessed and reviewed for tax purposes.

The gathering begins at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and an opportunity to socialize. The meeting is open to all.
