Brig. Gen. Keith Y. Tamashiro of the Hawaii National Guard (first photo) addresses the audience during a ceremony Sunday at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center to honor the Maui members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Infantry Battalion who were killed in action during World War II. The service is held each year on the Sunday closest to Sept. 29, the day in 1943 when Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata died in Italy. He was the first 100th Battalion soldier to be killed in action. Kansha Preschool student Malie Cabudol (front, second photo) prepares to carry a flower down the aisle to place in a basket in memory of a Maui soldier killed in action. Behind her is fellow preschooler Kaname Morihiro. The names and photos of the 101 Maui soldiers (third photo) killed in action are displayed at the veterans center Sunday.
