Haiku man arrested in Hookipa beating

The Maui News – A Haiku man is facing charges including attempted murder in connection with a beating at Hookipa Beach Park in Paia last month that left another man with catastrophic injuries, police said.

Randal Valoroso, 53, was arrested Wednesday on a Maui County grand jury warrant charging him with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and intimidating a witness. His bail was set at $500,000.

The victim had been with Valoroso and two other men at the beach park Aug. 24 when they got into an argument and a fight ensued, said Lt. Micah Adams of the Criminal Investigation Division. The victim fell to the ground and was beaten, suffering catastrophic injuries.

The victim was transported to Oahu for additional medical treatment, Adams said.

During an arraignment Thursday in 2nd Circuit Court, Valoroso pleaded not guilty to the charges. A bail hearing was set for Tuesday.

Valoroso’s brother, Chad Valoroso, 52, of Haiku was arrested the evening of Aug. 24 and was charged with first-degree assault, police records show. He was released after posting $250,000 bail.
