Man nabbed asleep in a stolen truck

A Kahului man was arrested early Thursday when he was seen sleeping in a stolen pickup truck that had been spray-painted red, police said.

Rusty Kawaha, 29, was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. His bail was set at $5,000.

Kawaha was asleep in the driver’s seat when police came across the Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, which was parked with its engine running at One Street and South Wakea Avenue in Kahului at 1:52 a.m. Thursday, according to a declaration filed in court to support Kawaha’s arrest.

The steering column of the truck was damaged. Police said the license plate on the truck actually belonged to a BMW sedan.

The black 2000 Toyota Tacoma had been reported stolen Monday morning from Hukilike Street in Kahului.
