Pukalani Elementary School Principal Kathleen Dimino was approved as public schools complex area superintendent for the Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui complex by the state Board of Education on Tuesday.

Recommended by new state schools Superintendent Christina Kishimoto, Dimino’s appointment is effective Sept. 14. She will replace acting Superintendent Bruce Anderson, who came out of retirement to fill in for Leila Hayashida.

Hayashida was appointed complex area superintendent in January 2016 and recently transferred to a position on Oahu. Anderson previously served as complex area superintendent but most recently was Maui High School principal.

Dimino has been with the department since 1991 and has served as vice principal at King Kekaulike High and Lahaina Intermediate schools, district education specialist, state resource teacher, student services coordinator, English teacher and special education teacher.

The board also approved Phyllis Unebasami as deputy superintendent and David Brookshire “Brook” Conner as assistant superintendent for the Office of Information Technology Services.

“These leaders are experts in their areas, and I believe they will serve the department and Hawaii’s children well,” said Kishimoto. “I’d like to thank the board for their support and approval of these appointees, as well as Keith Hayashi, Amy Kunz and Phyllis Unebasami for their help during the transition.

“I look forward to continuing to work with them and the rest of my leadership team as we continue to look for ways to enhance my three areas of focus — student voice, teacher collaboration and school design.”
