A welcome reopening at Kealia Pond

Carmon Slater of Wheatridge, Colo., inspects an exhibit about Hawaiian coots while exploring the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center on Wednesday afternoon. As a birder who has helped construct exhibits on the Mainland, Slater said he was impressed by the displays. The visitor center reopened last week after being closed for nearly three years due to issues with the building. “I’ve been coming here for years,” Slater said. “It’s good to see it back open, but to also see their interpretations of local indigenous plants and animals.”
